Chapter 23

Later, Sierra felt that crossing the river of pus was one of the worst of their trials, even if it was not the most dangerous. No one became ill as a result of contact with the disgusting effluvium, but it had been a severe test nonetheless. The feel of the warm, lumpy ooze on her bare flesh made Sierra heave, but of course there was nothing to come up. Fred kept up a keening wail that finally prompted Chaco to smack him, much to Ix Mol’s indignation. And they had to slog through the slimy, slippery, stinking mess for at least a mile.

By the time they reached the far bank of the river, they were worn out by the effort of fighting their own bodies’ responses. The first thing they did was to use as much of their water as they dared to wash away the putrid slime. The second thing they did was to put as much ground between themselves and river as possible before slumping into exhausted slumber.
